During his training, he completed a research thesis that resulted in a Master of Philosophy Degree and won the UK Intensive Care Society’s Travelling Fellowship, which allowed him to visit trauma centres in Denver, Memphis, and Seattle. Dr Lockie was awarded a Fellowship from the Irish College of Surgeons in 1985 and won the Gold Medal at the Intercollegiate Examination in General Surgery in February 2003. He was the first surgeon from Belfast to win the Gold Medal. He was also awarded a Fellowship from the Australian College of Surgeons in 2006.
