After graduating from medical school in Berlin, he trained in neurology at the Charité, followed by epilepsy fellowships in Strasbourg and Geneva. He holds two research doctorates in cognitive neurology and health systems research, as well as master’s degrees from the Universities of Cambridge and London. Currently, he reads health and medical law at Melbourne Law School.
He has served as an Independent Medical Expert for the Supreme Courts in all Australian jurisdictions and the High Court (King’s Bench) in England. He has experience providing evidence in civil, criminal, and coronial court proceedings.
He chairs the Australia and New Zealand Association of Neurologists’ Therapeutics Committee and the American Academy of Neurology’s Neuroepidemiology Section. He also serves on the International League Against Epilepsy’s Standards and Best Practice Council.

His specialty training in Brisbane and Melbourne, his exposure to several sports, and his differing management approaches have honed his skills and knowledge. Dr Hislop manages medical problems and injuries affecting all body parts but specialises in exertional leg pain. He has published research on Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome and is one of the few practitioners in South East Queensland who performs compartment pressure studies. He deals with diagnosis, injury management and rehabilitation, exercise-related medical issues management, sports psychology, sports nutrition and performance enhancement, and surgical advice and treatment. He is involved in research in the management of Popliteal Artery Entrapment Syndrome. Dr Hislop has co-authored a number of chapters in the Sports Medicine equivalent of the ‘Bible’, Brukner and Kahn’s Clinical Sports Medicine. Dr Hislop will perform PRP injections on appropriate patients and is skilled in intra-articular cortisone injections.

He’s the Clinical Lead for the NSW COVID-19 Care in Community program and holds many positions, including Medical chair of NSW Emergency Care Institute Research Committee, Adjunct Associate Professor at University of Sydney, Adjunct Fellow at Macquarie University’s Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research, honorary research fellow at Westmead Institute for Medical Research.
He also played a key role in developing a COVID-19 patient tracking platform and risk scoring system. He’s involved in sepsis screening research and contributed to AI-based sepsis screening tools. He also engages in clinical work in rural Australian EDs and international charity missions.
