Dr Matthew Gutman is a highly experienced Neurosurgeon and Spinal Surgeon practising in Victoria, Australia. He holds an MBBS (Hons), DipYW and FRACS in Neurosurgery, and is a recognised expert in the full spectrum of neurosurgical and spinal care. His clinical appointments include senior roles at major public hospitals such as The Alfred and Austin Hospitals, as well as private practice through Cabrini and specialist clinics, giving him broad exposure to complex neurological and spinal conditions across diverse patient populations.
Dr Gutman’s subspecialty training extends internationally. After completing the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons neurosurgery program, he undertook further fellowships in flexible endoscopy and hydrocephalus surgery, functional neurosurgery at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (Queen’s Square) and Cambridge University Hospital, and advanced training in complex neurovascular and minimally invasive spine surgery. He has also been awarded the prestigious Dr Lena McEwan and Dame Joyce Daws Churchill Fellowship, enabling further specialist hands-on experience in neuro-modulation and lesioning techniques at leading centres in North America, and in 2024 he pioneered the first laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) program in Victoria for seizure and tumour treatment.
His clinical interests include brain mapping and resection for brain tumours and epilepsy, spinal disorders, neurovascular pathology, aneurysms and functional neurosurgery, with experience treating both adult and paediatric patients.
