Dr Matt Gutman

Dr Gutman’s subspecialty training extends internationally. After completing the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons neurosurgery program, he undertook further fellowships in flexible endoscopy and hydrocephalus surgery, functional neurosurgery at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (Queen’s Square) and Cambridge University Hospital, and advanced training in complex neurovascular and minimally invasive spine surgery. He has also been awarded the prestigious Dr Lena McEwan and Dame Joyce Daws Churchill Fellowship, enabling further specialist hands-on experience in neuro-modulation and lesioning techniques at leading centres in North America, and in 2024 he pioneered the first laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) program in Victoria for seizure and tumour treatment.

His clinical interests include brain mapping and resection for brain tumours and epilepsy, spinal disorders, neurovascular pathology, aneurysms and functional neurosurgery, with experience treating both adult and paediatric patients.
Beyond operative care, Dr Gutman is capable of delivering comprehensive, evidence-based Independent Medical Examinations (IMEs) and detailed medicolegal reports for a range of legal and compensation settings. He is experienced in providing impartial assessments and written opinions that support claims, causation analysis, prognosis, impairment evaluation and treatment appropriateness—skills directly translatable to WorkCover, TAC and medico-legal requirements. Dr. Gutman is AMA 4 accredited for core and spinal assessments.

r Damon Thomas completed his medical degree at the University of Auckland, in New Zealand and trained across Auckland and Christchurch. By 2005 Dr Thomas completed his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr Thomas completed subspeciality training at the Melbourne Institute of Plastic Surgery and on paediatric hand and microvascular surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Dr Damon Thomas has a unique interest in managing paediatric hand and upper limb conditions including congenital anomalies, cerebral palsy, sarcomas and acquired conditions such as obstetric brachial plexus palsy.

Dr Damon Thomas is available for independent medical examinations and has AMA4 and AMA5 impairment accreditation. A/Prof Mack is a Principal Associate at Eye Surgery Associates, a multi-disciplinary ophthalmic practice in Melbourne, where she heads the visual electrophysiology laboratory and clinical trials units. She has provided leadership in over 30 clinical trials to date. She was a board member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists 2011-2020 and was President 2018-2020.

She has been co-Facilitator/Assessor for training in AMA 4th Edition, Impairment assessment of the Visual System in Victoria (6/2021-2/2023) and NSW (2023-present). Government appointments have included consultant to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency for ophthalmic practice performance assessment (2013); Member of Medical Panels Victoria 2016-present; consultant to Therapeutic Goods Administration on retinal effects of a new drug 2015; and member of the Victorian Surgical Consultative Council 2004-2011. She has conducted over 100 independent assessments for legal firms in Australia.
